Place Blanche

etching, aquatint (1913)
A merchant, behind a car overflowing with potatoes, turnips and celery, serves a customer. On the left, a girl with hair. In the background, a stall, a few customers and some Montmartre houses.
4th state, 140 mm × 118 mm.
Printed at 75 impressions and 1 à 3 state proof.
Boutitie 55, BPL 14.
The bag has been lightened by removing the crosshatching on the top side and the darkened merchant to reverse the contrast and restore proper perspective.

The foreground has been darkened. The shopkeeper stands out clearly against the background. An unfortunate shortcut between the bag in the car and the customer gives the impression that the latter is an ass in the car.

2nd state, 140 mm × 118 mm.
Printed at 1 à 3 state proof.
BPL 14.
With the drawing of the background but without contrast of values. The little girl does not stand out in the background, with the bodies of the merchant and the customer of the houses behind them.

1st state, 140 mm × 118 mm.
Printed at 1 à 3 state proof.
BPL 14.
Without the background. The shopkeeper and the customer are modelled with a light line, the girl and the car are barely sketched.
