The Acrobat

An acrobat gives an exhibition during the sideshow. At the back, behind the cashier's desk, an epitome of the circus is to be found with the tamer and a small orchestra. At the front a clown is leaning on an upright, watching the crowd, hands in his pockets.

Printed at 75 impressions and 10 artist proofs.

With additional shading, expecially in the background, mostly worked with the roulette.

The edition proofs, printed by Vernant for l'Estampe Moderne, bear the stamps of the artist and the Cercle de la Librairie. The proofs on hollande are numbered on 75. The print is described in the Bibliographie de la France (Timbrage, September 12, 1924, p. 212, no. 1548: L'Acrobate, original etching by Brouet, etched with drypoint (sic), 0.155×0.172, without remarque. Edition of 105 copies on hollande paper and various papers, at 600 fr; and 14 May 1926, n° 197: Acrobate (L'), engraving by Brouet, price 500 fr, Paris, impr. Vernaut (sic), l'Estampe moderne, 14 rue Richelieu) . It is a reprise of the Parade (Ba 162). The plate was acquired by the Chalcographie in 1932 (inv. no. 7158).
