The Print Lover

Clad in his nightgown, the print lover is sitting at a table, in his study-room. The dim light, the two large print stands cluttering the foreground, the prints negligently left lying on the floor, every detail let the print lover's passion transpire.

The third state differs from the second by the cut of the plate.

This plate seemed originally intended for a map for the publisher Hesselle, but probably did not have this use. No state with the letter is known. The plate underwent a first printing (not mentioned in the B catalogue), made - probably by E. Delâtre - for Ch. Hessèle around 1910, like the plate of Les Fripiers à Saint-Ouen (Ba 81). In addition to 3 trial proofs, there were proofs on japon pelure, numbered from 1 to 12, proofs on chine volant from 13 to 35 and on tinted laid paper from 36 to 50. A second edition was executed by Vernant for Alexis around 1925. There were 25 proofs on japon mince, numbered out of 25 and 25 proofs on tinted laid paper numbered out of 50. A proof of the crossed-out plate was also printed, on old paper. The plate was always considerably larger, even after cutting, than the etched part, which measures 55×75 mm.

2^nd state, 247 mm × 126 mm.

The light has been reduced almost completely, while a lot of work has been added, especially the tight pruning on the wallet on the left and the lectern on the right, as well as vertical pruning on the leaves that emerge from it.
