Five soldiers march to the left. On the backs of these fathers of families heavily loaded musettes. They wear the old kepi and have inserted the bottom of their trousers into the stem of their shoes. In the background, other soldiers are crossing a makeshift footbridge.

In addition to the additional work, the plate has been trimmed by 7 millimeters on the bottom edge.

The second state was printed with 10 artist's proofs, one of which on old paper, 5 on japon mince and 4 on hollande; 15 edition proofs (1-15) on japon mince and 60 (16-75) on hollande. The proofs were printed by Delātre for Boutitie.
