The Small Dice Players

Three figures in 17th century military costume are gathered around a table lit by a central light. One is standing, leaning on a spear. He is looking down on his comrades seated at the table, playing dice. His enlarged profile is sketched on the left. The paving of the room and the arched threshold evoke a guardhouse.
Only state, 142 mm × 109 mm.

The plate is not bevelled.

Brouet's first print, made at the age of fifteen. A small historicizing scene in the style of Meissonier. It is an etching on zinc, varnished with floor wax and printed on a primitive press. Two known proofs, one from the Grignard collection, at the BPL, the other from the Petiet collection, sold June 2007 at PIASA (lot n° 31, "Fantaisie").
