Renown

In the early 1920s, a wide public developed a keen interest in Auguste Brouet's etchings. This sudden renown is all the more remarkable as he was approaching his fifties and his repute had up to then been limited to a small circle of a few specialized dealers and rare enlightened amateurs.

This multifarious renown can be found in the opinions of experts such as Loys Delteil who wrote in 1925 : "Brouet is one of the most fashionable original etchers of our times" (i); in the catching enthusiasm of dealers such as Jean Alexis who claims around the 1930s that "among the best known masters, Brouet occupies the first place" (ii). He also receives official tributes of honour from the State, from his first commission for the Chalcographie du Louvre in 1924 to the Grand prix at the Universal Exhibition in 1937.next
